The Wrong Reason To Seek God

John 6:26, 27  Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.  Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you . . .”

Jesus is talking to the people who had received a meal from Him when He miraculously fed the 5,000.  He was at the height of His popularity.  People had traveled over land and sea to find Him.  However, rather than being flattered by the large crowd, Jesus Christ is always more concerned about the individual’s spiritual need.  To help these people, Jesus begins, not by telling the people how wonderful they are, but how wrong they are.

The problem lies in that they are seeking Him for the wrong reason.  Jesus proved that He could miraculously provide for the people’s physical needs.  The intent in doing so was not to get people fixated on getting more food.  It was to show that He was God and could sustain life.  Instead of worshipping Jesus, they sought Him because they thought He was the way to get what they wanted – in this case another meal.  Jesus had to correct them because they had a selfish view of His power.  They had an agenda in mind and they viewed Jesus Christ as a means to get what they wanted.  Sad to say, many come to Jesus today for the same wrong reasons.

Jesus did not do miracles to make people hunger for more miracles any more than a man buys his wife a box of chocolates because he wants her to love chocolate.  A husband’s intention is to show his wife something about himself, such as his love and appreciation for her.  She misses the point entirely if all she can think about is when she will get the next box!

Jesus did miracles, not to give us an appetite for more miracles, but to show us something about Himself.  If you think that following Jesus is the way to get Him to achieve your agenda in life, you are missing the point entirely.  His miracles show us how great and powerful He is.  It is not your agenda for God that is important, but rather His plan for your life.  Jesus alone has the power to save you from your sins and to give you eternal life.  You will never be disappointed when you seek Jesus for the right reason.
